General knowledge and web search

Turn on Web search and General knowledge for an assistant in Learner experience, and what to do if the toggles are missing.

Written by Romain Morvant

This page explains how to let an assistant search the web or fall back on general knowledge. Web search and General knowledge are not on the General tab: they sit on Settings > Learner experience, under Learner permissions. Each toggle appears only if your organization allowed it.

The Learner permissions section of an assistant's Learner experience settings, with toggles including Web search and General knowledge.

Turn them on

  1. Open the assistant, then Settings. Select Learner experience.

  2. Under Learner permissions, find Web search and General knowledge if they are listed, and turn on the ones you want.

  3. When a bar appears, select Save.

Web search lets learners search the web in a conversation. Course content stays the primary source. In a conversation, web search can also appear on the message field when it is allowed.

General knowledge is a fallback when the assistant's resources and search do not have the answer. The assistant's resources stay the primary source.

If you do not see the toggles

An organization admin enables these for the organization first. If that organization setting is off, the toggles are hidden on the assistant. Nothing on General controls them.
