General knowledge and web search defaults

Allow Web search and General knowledge for your organization, then enable them on each assistant under Learner experience.

Written by Romain Morvant

Allow Web search and General knowledge for the organization first. Each assistant still has to turn them on. New assistants do not start with those options already on. For an overview of all organization capabilities, see Capabilities enabled across the organization.

Allow them for the organization

Switch to the organization, then open Settings, Organization, Assistants. In Capabilities, turn Web search, General knowledge, or both on or off, then save.

  • Web search: allows assistants to use the web once a teacher also enables it on the assistant. Course content stays the primary source.

  • General knowledge: allows answers from general knowledge when assistant resources do not cover an in-scope topic. Assistant resources stay the primary source.

Only an Admin sees this page. If your role is Trainer, you do not see Assistants.

Then enable them on an assistant

After the organization allows a feature, a teacher opens the assistant, then Settings, Learner experience. Under Learner permissions, the matching option appears. New assistants start with both options off, even when the organization switches are on.

If the organization switch is off, the assistant options are hidden and chat cannot use the feature. Saving organization Capabilities does not add collections to existing assistants; that prompt is only for default collections.

For the per-assistant steps, see General knowledge and web search.
