Canvas troubleshooting

Fix Canvas courses that never appear, an invalid redirect URL, a rejected LTI configuration, or a missing course navigation entry.

Written by Romain Morvant

Work through the symptom that matches what you see. Most Canvas problems are a disabled developer key, a mismatched URL, or a missing scope.

Canvas courses do not appear in Raison

Check that:

  • the API developer key is enabled

  • the Client ID and secret are correct

  • the Canvas URL is the bare domain (no /admin, /courses, or /login)

  • the scopes are enabled

  • the Canvas user who authorised Raison actually has access to the expected courses

Canvas reports an invalid redirect URL

The Redirect URI in Canvas must match this address character for character:

https://services.raison.is/integration/canvas/v2/oauth/callback

Look for a trailing slash, a stray space, or http instead of https.

Canvas rejects the LTI configuration URL

Confirm the JSON URL is exactly https://services.raison.is/integration/lti/config/canvas.json and that the key was created with Enter URL as the method.

Raison does not appear in the course navigation

Check that:

  • the LTI key is enabled

  • the app is installed in the right Canvas account

  • the course belongs to that account

  • the tool is enabled under Course → Settings → Navigation

Raison says no assistant is attached

The LTI connection works. The course simply has no assistant yet. See Attach an assistant to a course.

Authorization fails before the Canvas login page

Canvas can reject the whole request with invalid_scope when the developer key is missing a scope Raison asks for. Add the folders scope (url:GET|/api/v1/courses/:course_id/folders) to the API key, then try again.

Still stuck

Write to [email protected]. Include your Canvas domain, the step that failed, a screenshot of the error, the Client ID when relevant, and the approximate time of the test. Never send the Client Secret.
