Custom instructions are extra rules you type once. Assistants follow them when they answer you, together with your tone and message length. This page shows where to set them and what to write.
Where to find them
As a teacher or admin, open your avatar, then Settings, then Preferences. The field sits with message length and tone.
As a learner (workspace, share link, or website widget), open your name menu and select Preferences. The field is on the same form.
What to type
The field is optional. Use it for durable guidance: format, vocabulary, or how you like explanations. Do not put secrets or one-off questions here. You can write up to 2,000 characters.
Save when you are done. The instructions follow your account. They apply when you chat, including when a teacher previews an assistant.
To clear them, delete the text and save.
What this is not
Mode in the chat (Support or Effort) is a different control. It does not replace custom instructions.
