Academic integrity and AI assistance

How an assistant fits with academic integrity: what it is for, what copy-paste blocking and anti-cheat do not detect, and where to state your policy.

Written by Romain Morvant

An assistant in Raison is study help grounded in the collections you attach. It can explain, quiz for practice, and point to sources. It does not replace a learner's own work, and it is not a plagiarism detector.

What the assistant is for

Use it to practise, to check a concept against the course, and to find the passage behind an answer.

On-demand Quiz in chat is practice. Teacher-built exams live under Exams. Those two paths are not the same.

Learners and teachers can set custom instructions and tone in preferences. That changes how answers are written. It does not enforce an integrity policy.

When answers leave the course

Course materials stay first. Two settings can widen where the assistant looks, if the organization allowed them and you turned them on for this assistant: general knowledge as a fallback, and web search on a given message. Turn both off if you want answers only from your materials.

The learner preview of an assistant, with the message composer showing the Web search control next to Attach file, Dictate and Submit.

Ask a teacher instead

When the assistant is not enough, or when a learner needs a human judgement, they can send that message with Ask my teacher. That control appears only if you left it on (it is on by default). This is not email. Teachers review those questions in Q&A.

Copy-paste and quiz anti-cheat are not AI detectors

On the assistant, blocking copy and paste in learner experience settings stops learners copying or pasting in chat. That is a typing constraint. It does not detect AI-written work.

On an exam quiz, anti-cheat has three switches only: block copy and paste, end the attempt on tab change, and record the session. They can end or record a quiz attempt. They do not scan answers for AI.

Write the policy where learners will see it

Raison will not grade honesty for you. Put your rule in the places learners actually open: the first welcome screen, for what the assistant is for and what still counts as their own work, and the disclaimer under the chat field. See Learner onboarding message and Show an AI disclaimer to learners.

Only an organization admin can edit those two fields. If your role is trainer, say the rule in class and in the assistant introduction message.
