Guidance for teachers introducing an assistant to a class

Prepare a first class session with an assistant: test it, make it public, choose how learners open it, and explain what it is for.

Written by Romain Morvant

A first class session goes better when the assistant is public, tested, and learners know what it is for. Use the steps below before you send anyone in.

Test, then make it public

Open the assistant and use Preview. Ask a few real questions from the course. Wait until resources on the knowledge base are Ready.

When you are ready, open Share and turn on Make assistant public. Anyone with the link can open it, but it will not show up in a public directory. Learners cannot use a draft.

The Share teaching assistant dialog with the Make assistant public switch on and the Integration tab showing Moodle course attachment options.

How learners open it

The Share sheet has no Copy shareable link button. After the assistant is public, pick one of these paths:

  • On the Invite tab, use Invite learners by email so each person gets a personal, secure link. Add them to your Learners table first if Invite learners is disabled.

  • Attach the assistant to a Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard course when your LMS is connected.

  • On the Custom tab, copy embed code for an Iframe, Chatbot, or Panel. If you need a plain link, the src of the Iframe snippet is the learner chat URL.

After they sign in, chats sit under Recents on that assistant. They can also find it again from the learner workspace.

What they see the first time

On first open, learners get a two-screen welcome. An organization admin can replace the body of the first screen in organization assistant settings. Leave it empty to keep the default. A trainer does not see that page. See Learner onboarding message.

The learner welcome view of an assistant with a greeting, suggested starter questions, prompt buttons for Quiz, Summary, Study plan, Diagram and All prompts, and an empty Recents area.

The second screen tells them conversations can be logged and reviewed. You cannot edit that screen. After they confirm, it does not show again on that browser.

In the chat, set an introduction message and conversation starters in general settings so the first empty chat looks like your course. See Intro message and conversation starters.

An admin can also add a disclaimer under the chat field. Empty means none. See Show an AI disclaimer to learners.

Say what the assistant is for

Tell the class, in your own words, that the assistant answers from your course materials, that it can miss, and when they should come to you instead.

In the product, leave Enable ask Instructor on so learners see Ask my teacher and can escalate a message. Choose Support or Effort for this course. Keep general knowledge and web search off if answers should stay in your materials. See General knowledge and web search.
