Sample answers and explanations

Learn where to write the correct answers, accepted values, model answers and explanations for each question type, and what learners can see.

Written by Romain Morvant

Each question type stores a reference answer in a different place. You write it when you add or edit the question in an Exams quiz. Raison uses that reference to grade. Learners may see a version of it after they answer, depending on how the quiz is delivered.

Open a question

Open Exams, open the quiz, then go to Questions. Edit a card, or add a new question. Pick the type, then fill the answers for that type.

Choice and True / False

For Single choice and Multiple choice, each option has an answer and an optional explanation. Mark the correct option or options. For True / False, mark the correct side, then you can add an explanation on that correct option.

On the card, correct options are highlighted. If you wrote an explanation, that text appears under the correct option. There is no separate explanation heading on the card.

Fill in the blank

List the accepted answers. Any of those values counts as correct. You can add more than one accepted value. This type has no explanation field.

On the card, those values appear as a sample answer.

Open-ended

Write a model answer. You cannot save without it. You can also add grading criteria. Raison uses the model answer, and the criteria when you provide them, to grade what learners write.

On the card, the model text appears as a sample answer.

What learners can see

The questions list does not switch formative or summative mode. That setting lives in the quiz settings. When a quiz reveals the correction, learners can see choice explanations on revealed options, accepted answers for fill in the blank, and a sample answer for an open-ended question.

This applies to the teacher quiz in Exams, not the on-demand quiz in assistant chat.
