Formative or summative assessment

Choose whether learners see if each answer is right as they go (Formative) or only get a score at the end (Summative).

Written by Romain Morvant

Choose when learners see a verdict: as they go, or only when they finish. Pick Formative or Summative. This is not a Bloom level, and it is not a case-study setting.

Open assessment mode

Open Exams, open the quiz, then go to Settings. Choose Formative or Summative.

The Assessment mode section in quiz Settings with the Summative and Formative choices

You can make the same choice while you create the quiz, on Quiz delivery. New quizzes start on Summative.

Formative

Use Formative when you want learners to know if each answer is right or wrong as they go. After they lock an answer they cannot change it. At the end they see the full correction for each question. There is no overall AI comment on that screen.

Summative

Use Summative when you want to hide the correct answers during the quiz. Learners see a score when they finish, then a short overall comment. The per-question correction list is not shown.

What stays the same

In both modes, learners can skip an unanswered question. Sample answers you write on Questions appear in the correction when that correction is shown.

Teacher Preview follows the same mode.

Case study is separate

This setting is for quizzes in Exams. Case study is a different exam format. It is listed but unavailable, marked Coming soon, and there is no case-study assessment setting here.

On the same Settings tab you can also set the timer, anti-cheat options, and multiple attempts.
