Timer: per question or for the whole quiz

Set a quiz timer in Exams: no timer, a limit per question, or one limit for the whole quiz, and the duration learners get.

Written by Romain Morvant

Give learners a clock, or leave the quiz untimed. You choose whether that time is counted for each question or for the whole quiz.

Open the timer

Open Exams, open the quiz, then go to Settings. The quiz name and description sit at the top of this tab. Set the timer in the same place.

The quiz Settings tab with the Timer mode menu showing No timer, Per question and Whole quiz

You can set the same timer while you create the quiz, on Quiz delivery. Exams appears in the sidebar only if your organization can use exams.

Choose a mode

New quizzes start with No timer. Learners then work with no clock, and you do not enter a duration.

Pick Per question when you want a limit on each question. Learners still see one Time remaining clock. That clock is your duration multiplied by the number of questions they receive.

Pick Whole quiz when you want one limit for the entire attempt. The duration you enter is the clock.

Set the duration

When the mode is timed, enter a duration in minutes. Use a whole number of at least 1. Per question applies that duration to each question. Whole quiz applies it to the full attempt.

While you create the quiz, the duration starts at 5 minutes. After you create it, if the quiz is still No timer, Settings starts the duration at 0. If you switch to a timed mode and save with less than 1 minute, the form shows A duration of at least 1 minute is required. That English line also appears in the French UI.

Learners see the mode and the duration as separate labels, for example Per question and 5min. The same 5min, 5min 30s, or 30s format appears on the teacher summary. If time reaches zero, the attempt is submitted.

Teacher Preview uses the same timer rules. It does not start a session recording.

What learners see

A timed quiz shows Per question or Whole quiz, then Time remaining once they start. A quiz with no clock lists No timer.

This timer is for quizzes in Exams, not the on-demand quiz in assistant chat. See Turn on on-demand quizzes, summaries, study plans and diagrams.

On the same Settings tab you can also set the assessment mode, anti-cheat options, and multiple attempts.
