Allow multiple attempts

Let learners retake a quiz in Exams as often as they need, or keep each learner on a single attempt.

Written by Romain Morvant

Let learners start the quiz again themselves, or keep them on a single attempt. This setting applies to everyone and is not the action where you grant one extra attempt to a single learner.

Open the setting

Open Exams, open the quiz, then go to Settings. Turn Allow multiple attempts on or off.

The quiz Settings tab with the Allow multiple attempts switch turned off

You can set the same switch while you create the quiz, on Quiz delivery. New quizzes start with it off.

When it is on

Learners can start another attempt after they finish. There is no maximum number to set on this tab: they retry themselves as often as they need. You do not need to grant extra attempts from Learners in this case.

When it is off

Each learner gets one attempt, unless you later grant another from Learners. If they open the quiz again after that attempt, they cannot take it again.

Teacher Preview does not follow this switch.

Sharing the quiz, embedding it in an LMS, and inviting learners are separate steps that come after Settings. On the same Settings tab you can also set the timer, assessment mode, and anti-cheat options.
