Create an assistant from scratch or from your documents

Build an assistant from files, web pages or pasted text with Start from scratch, then generate it.

Written by Romain Morvant

Use Start from scratch when you do not already have a collection or an LMS course to reuse. Your materials can live on your computer, on a web page, or in text you want to paste. Raison builds the assistant from those sources. Its answers stay limited to that knowledge base.

Start creating

Open Quick create in the sidebar, or open Teaching assistants and select Create assistant. Then select Start from scratch. It sits below Use a collection and any LMS options.

After you first create your account, Raison can take you straight here. You do not need to go to the Dashboard first.

If you already have a collection, select Use a collection instead.

Add your sources

Drop files onto the page, or browse from your computer. You can add PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images, audio, video, SCORM, and H5P. You can also paste a web address.

  1. Add at least one file or web page.

  2. After the first source is in the list, the drop zone hides. Select Add resource to add more: From your computer, Web page, Plain text, or From Raison library. If your organization connected them, you can also add Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Vimeo, or Nudgis by Ubicast.

  3. Wait until each source finishes uploading. You cannot select Generate assistant while an upload is still in progress, or while the list is empty.

You need at least one ready source. There is no preview step on this path, and no way to generate an empty assistant: with an empty knowledge base, answers would have nothing to draw from.

Generate

Select Generate assistant. Select Back if you want a different starting point.

Raison names the assistant New assistant for now, and names the collection New assistant Collection. You can rename the assistant after it is ready.

For the wait, the email notification, and what to do if a document needs you, see What happens during generation.

If you have reached the assistant limit, you cannot create another one. Write to [email protected] if you need help.

After it is ready

You can add more materials later from the assistant's knowledge base, or from Knowledge bases.
